Forbes magazine recently reported on the explosive growth of what it called the climate business. Many places and companies make money from the old energy system. The question is how the new way of getting, using and distributing energy could benefit other places, in our case, the Adirondacks. Based on the ADKCAP Energy and GHG Inventory, we send more than a billion dollars out of our area each year to buy energy. Research shows that we could save close to 30 percent of that with currrently available options.
There are real potential savings that could be invested somewhere else because so much energy is wasted. Right now around 60 percent of the energy at a power plant is lost as a byproduct of making electricity. Another ten percent is lost in transmission. An inefficient appliance can waste much of the electricty that actually arrives at a home. It all costs money. A better system could get us exactly the same use for a fraction of the energy used. The money we save could be invested in all kinds of ways that could help us build a better economy for the Adirondacks.
There are three areas of interest for the Adirondacks.
Can we create lasting quality jobs in this new energy economy?
Can we create new jobs that help us cut waste?
Can we save real money and have it to invest in other areas?
