Green Travel Grows
This section of the ADKCAP Web site is for tourism leaders looking to soften their impact on the environment.
Next to the government, the tourism industry employs more people than any other sector in the Adirondacks. And it is through the tourism industry—restaurants, hotels, ski areas, etc.—that most of the 8 million people who visit the Adirondacks every year come to know the region. That gives tourism leaders two significant opportunities to help the region move toward energy independence:
According to a study presented at the 2009 International Tourism Convention, in Berlin, a third of all “travel-active households” now consider environmental and humanitarian factors when deciding where to stay and what to do.
The same study showed that this group of travelers would pay more for services they knew did not damage local ecosystems. The public, the report said, would pay up to 8 percent more for “corporate social responsibility.”
The upshot is that going green is not a path to going broke. Customers are willing—or becoming more willing—to share in the cost of making the tourism industry better for the environment.
