Attendance at Wintergreen Promotes Action in Local School District

Here is my brief report from the "Wintergreen" event that was hosted by The Wild Center on Friday November 13th, 2010 at Whiteface Mountain.

For a free public event it was well attended with over 70 participants. The main purpose was to get concerned ADK citizens more involved in small ways to curtail their carbon dioxide impact on the environment. From the economic perspective Jim McKenna - President of the Regional Office of Sustainable Development, stated that Essex County winter tourism is 30% of the economic impact. In addition every year more than $1.5 billion is spent on energy in the Adirondacks. That's a bigger sum than the total money that comes into our biggest industry, tourism.

It was not a doomsday or finger pointing type of conference, but rather how local Adirondack communities and citizens can have an impact. I have been watching this unfold in the scientific field over the past 15-20 years and have never been a alarmist type, but now clearly see how the links between energy policy, global carbon emissions and weather extremes are now at a tipping point that will affect us regardless of what we want to believe.

Main Take Away - The Adirondacks will experience a 5 to 10 deg. F warming over the next 50-100 years depending on how quickly worldwide carbon dioxide emissions are cut.

Impacts to our economy and school:
1) Snowmobiling will not be viable except for 2-4 weeks and possibly non-existent. This is mainly due to the fact that it is more dependent on natural snow.
2) Ice fishing season will decrease due to reduced hard freezes on lakes.
Fact - The time between the ice-in and ice-out dates have decreased by 3 weeks since 1960 on Schroon Lake.
3) Shorter ski season and more reliance on man made snow at local areas such as Gore and Whiteface.
3) Air conditioning may need to be installed in SLSC to accommodate hotter Sept, May and June months. This will in turn lead to higher energy demands and then increased carbon emissions if not from a carbon-free source.
4) Loss of boreal habitat on top of high peaks in Adirondacks.
5) Greater weather extremes during all seasons and more occurrences or mid-winter thaws leading to ice dams/flooding on rivers.
6) Possible change/die-out of plant/animal species that are native to the Adirondacks.

Recommendations for Town of Schroon and SLSC
1) All Town Board members review/read Jerry Jenkins book - Climate Change in the Adirondacks - My review is that is practical, actionable and realistic.
2) All future Town and School projects should look at renewable energy or biomass as alternatives to using fossil fuel (propane, oil, natural gas and coal). If the project is conducted properly this can help to attract both tourism and be touted as being environmentally carbon neutral or reduced.  My take away is that this does attract people to vacation and live in the community.
3) Adopt a energy vision statement for the Town and SLSC. e.g. "The Town of Schroon SLSC plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by x% by the year 20XX" or "x% of the energy requirements for the Town or Schroon will be supplied by renewable or carbon-neutral power sources".
4) Town of Schroon become more involved with ADKCAP program. A link is at www.adkcap.org.
5) Encourage the Technology, Chemistry and Biology classes at SLSC to incorporate real-life problems such as carbon emissions into the program w/o taking away from State mandated testing and curriculum requirements.
